Nine-year-old Syed loved living in the big, noisy city. He enjoyed bright streetlights, tall skyscrapers, and delicious night-market snacks.
Every evening, Syed played in the garden behind his apartment with his cheerful sister, Memey, and their clumsy, adorable fluffy cat, Jumbo.
One cool Friday evening, the golden sun slipped behind the giant buildings. Purple dusk filled the city sky.
Suddenly, Memey pointed a tiny finger toward the tall brick wall near the garden gate.
"Look, Syed! What is that?" Memey whispered nervously, hugging her favorite fluffy teddy bear tight.
Syed looked up.
A giant, creepy black shadow was moving across the wall! It had huge pointy ears, sharp crooked claws, and it was swaying back and forth very slowly.
Tap, tap, tap!
The strange figure made a quiet scraping noise. Jumbo purred nervously, hiding behind Syed’s legs.
"Is it a city monster?" Memey gasped, her eyes growing wide like shiny saucers.
Syed felt a quick flutter of fear in his stomach, but he wanted to protect his little sister. He puffed out his chest bravely.
"Don't worry, Memey. City kids are brave! Let’s go inspect it together."
Holding hands tightly, Syed and Memey crept closer to the mystery wall. Jumbo trotted right behind them, waving his fluffy tail.
The dark shadow stretched bigger and taller! It looked like a giant beast ready to pounce!
Syed took a deep breath, grabbed a plastic toy flashlight from his pocket, and switched it on.
CLICK!
The bright yellow beam illuminated the corner behind the big green recycling bin.
"Aha! Got you!" shouted Syed proudly.
Suddenly, they heard a loud, funny sound.
MEOW!
Syed and Memey burst into giggles. The giant monster was not a monster at all! Sitting on top of a cardboard box was a tiny, fuzzy black kitten!
A street lamp behind the kitten had cast its long reflection onto the wall, making it look huge and scary. The "sharp claws" were just its tiny paws scratching a shiny metal soda can.
Jumbo trotted forward, sniffing the tiny kitten curiously. The brave little kitten purred loudly and rubbed its head gently against Jumbo’s soft nose.
"Can we keep him, Syed?" Memey asked, squealing with pure excitement.
Syed smiled brightly. "Of course! Let's name him Shadow!"
They carried their cute new friend upstairs to show their parents. That night, the scary shadow turned into the sweetest cuddle buddy in the entire city.
Syed learned that things are never as terrifying as they seem when you face them with courage.
